There is little doubt that the events of September 10th, 2008 will remain fresh in our minds for quite some time. Even with plans to rebuild, one issue has yet to be addressed; reestablishment of the vendors. Even though everyone’s situation is different, for the vast majority, everything they were able to sale became victim of consequence. So what does this mean to the local economy? Even if a new building were erected next week, most of the would-be vendors would have nothing to fill the spaces. There may be good news to those people that thought that the tragedy resulted in a total loss. “It is still hard to believe that something like this could have happened.” Says Dustin Salmons of WV Personalization as he announced to the media that a fund for the victims is underway in their honor.
WV Personalization Steps Up To Help Milton Flea Market Vendors He continues,” I know the pain that the other vendors feel. I had two booths selling flowers and craft supplies trying to raise money to buy a headstone for my brother that past last year. After you were there for a while, you got to know the customers and other vendors. It was like one large extended family. My heart goes out to everyone. The weekends were all many of these people had. They were good people just trying to make ends meet. They worked hard and put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into what they had. It is devastating to think that for many people, they just have their tears left. They don’t want a handout; they just need a heads up. My company has setup a fund to help the victims get reestablished, or at very least help feed their families. Everyone that was affected is encouraged to come by the store and register. We have designed commemorative shirts to help raise money with personalization available. Vendors can also get their shirts with their company names and booth numbers on the front. Proceeds will be divided between the registrants. We hope to see other businesses get involved with the drive as well as local government. A proposal has been sent to local officials to help with the administration of the fund. It may be next week before the committee cast their votes, but we are hopeful that their involvement could help the awareness of the fund and help get the ball rolling for positive changes. Even if the impact is not as great as we hope, anything is better than doing nothing. With so many people affected, we must show them that their hard work was not in vein. We cannot be defeated unless we give up, and I don’t think the Tri-state will let that happen.” To register, or for more information on how you can help, please visit WV Personalization in the Huntington Mall, or call 304-733-HELP(4357). A website is being built for vendor support at www.vendorsfund.com Until it is launched, www.wvcenter.com will have information on the fund and information on ordering the commemorative shirts.
